If you require assistance with .au domain registration, please contact our helpdesk via email or telephone.
.au domains will launch on 24th March, but you also have the option of pre-ordering it right away.
A .au domain can be registered by anyone with an Australian presence unlike .com.au, .net.au and .org.au. Companies can use their ABN/ACN to register their name and individuals can use an Australian identity proof eg: driver's license, passport, etc
We are currently accepting pre-orders for .au domains from businesses. .au domains for individuals will be supported in the near future.
If you are an existing .au domain owner, you get priority rights to the matching domain in .au. This safeguard has been implemented by the registry to ensure that no one can snap your brand name.
These domains will be reserved for existing domain owners until 20th Sept, 2022.
You must use the same contact details and ABN/ACN details as the 3rd level to claim your matching .au. If your existing .au domains are with Instra, we’ll do this for you!
Eg: ConnectedTech in Melbourne owns connectedtech.com.au and Contech owns connnectedtech.net.au. Who gets the domain then?
The .au registry has laid out a transparent priority process that will be followed in this case. You can take a look at it here
How do I check the priority category of my domain name?
You can easily check it on this handy priority checker tool created by the .au registry
What is the difference between .au and the existing 3rd level .au domains?
.au is shorter, sharper and more marketable than 3rd level .au domains. But beyond that .au domains have fewer restrictions and can be registered more easily.
Requirements: 3rd level .au domains need the registrant to have an ABN/ACN, Australian Trademark to secure a name whereas .au can be registered by anyone with an Australian presence
Flexibility: Unlike .com.au, .net.au, a .au domain you register does not be a close or exact match of your business, trademark. You can get creative and get any .au domain you’d like to.
Can I do anything to improve my chances of getting a .au domain?
Yes, a couple of things. If you manage a 3rd level .au domain and plan to get the matching .au domain check the registrant details and ensure they are up to date - this means the contact details as well as ABN/ACN details associated with it.
If you own multiple 3rd level domains (for the same term), ensure all the domains use the same details so you are not in contention with yourself!
If you want a specific domain name in .au which is not registered in any 3rd level .au extension today, register it now so you can get priority rights to the matching .au domain 24th March onwards.

as available due to the early stage of roll out for this domain.
If you submit an order for a domain that is later identified as reserved then we will unfortunately be unable to complete the
registration and you will be provided a full refund.
If you submit an order for a domain that is later identified as premium then you will have two options available to you:
